Recently I had an interesting conversation with Nicky Verd, a Tedx Speaker and ‘future of work’ coach who operates at the intersection of humanity and technology. That conversation led to some reflections on how ‘mindset at scale’ is now the biggest challenge in education in emerging countries, and what part the Edtech industry and local governments play in the game of global equity.&nbsp; In an era marked by the democratization of education, where quality learning is increasingly accessible through online platforms, a subtle and intriguing paradox emerges. While we celebrate the universal reach of education, we inadvertently encounter a new form of educational disparity: the luxury of mindset. This calls for a much deeper debate than the current one, particularly in emerging markets, where the synthesis of education and mindset could forge a path to genuine global equity. Traditionally, education was a privilege and a symbol of status, serving as a vehicle for upward mobility. The defining factor that separated the knowledgeable from the uninformed was access—or rather the lack thereof—to information. The dawn of the digital era signaled a tectonic shift in this paradigm. Quality education became accessible to anyone with an internet connection. Geographical barriers crumbled, and financial constraints eased, as the world witnessed a proliferation of free educational resources and affordable online courses. However, in the corridors of the world's top universities, education signifies more than just knowledge and technical skills. It represents a blend of knowledge and a particular mindset, one imbued with innovation, entrepreneurial thinking, resilience, curiosity, self-development, and personal growth. These attributes together form the new definition of what it means to be educated in the contemporary world.&nbsp; The question that arises then is: where do emerging markets stand in their ability to create an environment that nurtures this complex blend of knowledge and mindset? Are they equipped to challenge traditional institutions at scale, fostering a culture that aligns with this redefined concept of education? Nurturing this mindset is not a simple task. It requires a concerted effort from both the edtech industry and local governments, working together to reshape the educational landscape. Edtech's Role in a New Era of Learning The Edtech industry must be at the forefront of educational transformation, not just in providing access to information but in shaping the very fabric of learning. Here are some examples of areas where edtech should increasingly focus in the next few years: 1. Creating Collaborative Platforms: Edtech must build platforms that enable collaboration between educators, learners, governments, and other stakeholders. These platforms could host discussions, share best practices, and create a cohesive network that emphasizes mindset development. 2. Offering Specialized Courses on Mindset Development: Crafting courses that focus on nurturing innovation, curiosity, resilience, and other critical traits, and making them widely accessible, would be a key step in bringing mindset education to the masses. 3. Partnership with Local Institutions: Engaging with schools and universities to incorporate mindset development into their curricula and providing the necessary technological tools and support will ensure a more integrated approach. Local Governments: The Strategic Catalysts On the other hand, governments in emerging markets also play a crucial role in setting the stage for this evolution in education. Their policies and initiatives can either enable or hinder the proliferation of a new mindset. For example, I would hope to see increasing efforts in the following areas:&nbsp; 1. Policy Framework for Collaboration: Governments must establish clear regulations and incentives that promote collaboration between edtech companies, educational institutions, and other industry players. Such policies could include tax incentives, grants, or support in pilot projects. 2. Promoting Entrepreneurial Education: Encouraging schools and universities to incorporate entrepreneurial thinking into their curricula, supported by edtech platforms, would cultivate an environment where innovation thrives. 3. Creating Innovation Hubs: Establishing and supporting innovation hubs or centers of excellence that bring together educators, edtech professionals, entrepreneurs, and students will foster a culture of continuous learning and creativity. 4. Aligning with National Educational Goals: Governments should ensure that their educational policies align with the larger vision of building a mindset that supports innovation and growth. This means working closely with edtech to understand how technology can be leveraged to meet these goals. 5. Facilitating Fail-Safe Environments: Implementing legal frameworks that allow for failure without severe penalties will encourage experimentation and risk-taking, essential elements of an entrepreneurial mindset. A Vision for the Future The transformation of education through the joint efforts of Edtech and local governments presents an exciting horizon. Emphasizing knowledge and mindset, the industry and policymakers are redefining what it means to be educated. The opportunities are vast, with the promise of democratizing elite mindsets and fostering personal growth at an unprecedented scale. At the crossroads of these quantifiable and abstract aspirations stands a pivotal pillar: Leadership. From Startup to Scale-up: The Evolving Role of LeadershipIn the startup phase, agility is the name of the game. Teams are lean, roles overlap, and everyone wears multiple hats. Jill might be the marketer by day and the operations specialist by night, while Jack doubles up as the product developer and project manager. As startups blossom into scale-ups, several shifts occur:Role Specialization: As scale-ups grow, companies witness a surge in role specialization. This not only ensures that each function is led by a subject matter expert, but it also poses a challenge. The more specialized a role, the tougher it becomes to find a fitting replacement. Hence, leaving a void in leadership in such specialized roles can be detrimental.&nbsp;Heightened Pressure: Scale-ups face a twofold pressure. Internally, there's the challenge of meeting more ambitious targets. Externally, the stakes rise with every investment round, with investors demanding not just returns, but also predictability, sustainability and foresight.&nbsp; Complex Operational Dynamics: With growth comes complexity. Processes that were once quickly improvised now require careful design and documentation, extending from days to weeks. Decision chains elongate, and the ripple effect of one leadership decision can impact multiple facets of the business. Why Succession Planning Takes Center StageThe evolution highlighted above morphs succession planning from a 'good-to-have' in startups to a 'must-have' in scale-ups. However, many CEOs, despite being the vanguards of their companies, often overlook this critical aspect. The relentless pace of scale-up life, coupled with the reassuring presence of a dedicated team, can give a false sense of security. Many CEOs might believe that their C-suite counterparts have succession covered within their departments. But this assumption can be perilous.Moreover, while company health metrics traditionally spotlight financial data, user acquisition, and retention rates, they rarely shed light on organizational wellbeing, especially in terms of leadership stability and engagement. This blind spot can be a ticking time bomb. The Top 5 Risks Looming Over Scale-ups:Operational Disruptions: Any gap in leadership can stall crucial decisions. Grow or Grind: Succession Strategies for Scaling Success

AI has a way of holding up a mirror to humanity by amplifying what’s already there. This became clear to me during an interaction with ChatGPT that I didn’t expect to go quite the way it did.I uploaded an image of a young Black woman with short curly hair and requested a painting in her likeness. Simple enough, right? But when I saw what the AI had created, my stomach dropped. The woman in the painting was clearly caucasian. Her deep brown skin had been replaced with a pale complexion. Her short hair was smoothed into wavy, shoulder-length blondish strands. Even her eyes had changed—now a striking blue. It was as if the AI had glanced at her, acknowledged her, and then decided to rewrite her into something else.I decided to go deeper with Chatgpt. This is part of the actual exchange I had:Me: Why does the painting look nothing like the photo? The woman isn’t even the same skin tone.ChatGPT: AI models rely on interpretative algorithms that might not prioritize specific details like skin tone or cultural markers. This can result from biases in the training data.Me: Why did the AI paint the woman white?ChatGPT: This happens because of inherent biases in the training data, which might overrepresent certain demographics. Additionally, ambiguous prompts may lead the model to default to patterns it’s seen most frequently.Me: So, in summary, you’re saying the model has built-in biases?ChatGPT: Yes, that’s correct. Generative AI models like DALL·E can exhibit biases, not intentionally, but as a byproduct of their training.Me: But where do these biases actually come from?ChatGPT:1. Training Data Bias – AI is trained on large datasets that reflect societal biases. If certain groups are overrepresented or underrepresented, the AI learns and reflects those imbalances.2. Algorithmic Bias – AI generalizes patterns, often losing nuance. When uncertain, it defaults to the most frequent data it has seen.3. Design Choices – Developers make choices that affect bias, whether intentional or not.4. Bias Reinforcement – If biased outputs are used to retrain AI, the problem compounds over time.Me: So, how do we split responsibility between AI and humans?ChatGPT:• AI (Passive) – AI reflects the data it is trained on; it doesn’t choose to be biased.• Humans (Active) – Developers, organizations, and data curators shape what AI learns. Bias starts with human choices.Bias in AI: Symptom, Not the ProblemThe example was frustrating, but it was also illuminating. Bias in AI isn’t the problem; it’s the symptom. It’s a symptom of the decisions we make when curating datasets, the implicit norms we reinforce, and the systems we leave unchecked. AI doesn’t invent these patterns—it learns from us, amplifies what we teach it, and holds a mirror to our collective flaws.Think about it. When AI biases emerge, we’re quick to blame the machine. When I saw the image Chatgpt created, my first gut reaction was: ’Are you blind??’. Only later I asked: ”What the hell are you seeing, and why are you seeing it that way?”.But shouldn’t the real question be: What did we give it to learn from? If the training data overrepresents certain demographics, overlooks others, or perpetuates stereotypes, the AI will faithfully regurgitate those patterns, amplifying them in ways that can have far-reaching consequences.Human Responsibility: The Design ProblemLet’s be clear—biases in AI are a design problem, not a data problem. Yes, data is part of it, but the real issue lies in how we prioritize features, interpret ambiguity, and test inclusivity. Developers often fall into the trap of optimizing for speed, scale, and marketability, leaving questions of fairness and representation as afterthoughts.This is of course a technical oversight but far more importantly it’s an ethical blind spot. Why? Because tackling bias requires developers and organizations to ask uncomfortable questions: Who benefits from this model? Who doesn’t? And what are we reinforcing by ignoring edge cases and diverse scenarios? The tech industry’s reluctance to address these questions head-on is why AI systems consistently fail to represent the full spectrum of humanity.AI as a Mirror: What It Reveals About UsIf there’s one thing my interaction with ChatGPT taught me, it’s this: AI has a unique ability to force us to confront our own biases. It’s like holding up a mirror that shows us not who we want to be, but who we are. It reflects the flaws in our systems, our data, and our decisions. And it forces us to ask whether we’re willing to change.When AI biases go unaddressed, they manifest in ways that affect hiring, healthcare, law enforcement, and even democracy. For example, biased hiring algorithms can exclude certain demographics from job opportunities, perpetuating workplace inequality. In healthcare, AI trained on non-representative data can miss critical diagnoses in underrepresented groups, widening health disparities. And in law enforcement, predictive policing systems can unfairly target marginalized communities, exacerbating systemic injustices.The Silent Crisis: AI, DEI, and the Political BacklashThe conversation about AI bias doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Right now, we’re seeing a massive political and corporate shift—particularly in the U.S.—against DEI policies. Companies that once championed diversity and inclusion are now quietly rolling back DEI initiatives in the name of “meritocracy” and “neutrality.” But this isn’t neutrality. It’s regression.And the consequences extend far beyond hiring and corporate culture. AI learns from the world we create. If the biggest tech companies and corporations are systematically deprioritizing DEI, what happens to the data that trains the next generation of AI? It becomes less representative. Less inclusive. More skewed toward the perspectives of those already in power.Bias in AI then becomes a design choice. If today’s leadership removes diversity-conscious policies, tomorrow’s AI models won’t just inherit bias; they’ll institutionalize it at scale. The more companies deprioritize diverse hiring, leadership, and representation, the less diversity will be reflected in the very systems shaping the future.This is an ethical disaster unfolding in real time. And because it happens in the background—inside training data, inside corporate decisions, inside boardrooms—it won’t be obvious until it’s very late.Are we witnessing the beginning of a world where AI only sees what the most powerful corporations and policymakers want it to see? And what happens when the voices missing from AI are the same voices missing from leadership, governance, and decision-making?What to Do About ItAI doesn’t fix itself. If we want it to reflect the full spectrum of humanity, we need to act—individually and collectively. Here’s how:1. Expose Bias &amp; Demand Better – AI learns from us. The more we normalize calling out biased outputs—on social media, in professional circles, or directly to AI companies—the harder it is to ignore. Bias thrives in silence. Call it what it is.2. Shape the Narrative – AI isn’t neutral, and neither is the conversation around it. Tech companies move based on public perception and pressure. Articles, discussions, and posts that challenge AI bias force the industry to pay attention.3. Push for Representation in AI Development – The teams building AI shape its worldview. If they lack diversity, the technology will too. Whether you’re in tech or not, support organizations advocating for diverse voices in AI development.4. Demand Transparency &amp; Accountability – No more black-box excuses. AI systems should be audited for bias, and companies should release public reports on their fairness practices. We demand ethical standards in other industries—why should AI be any different?5. Support Ethical AI Regulation – Policy isn’t just for lawmakers. Individuals, organizations, and advocacy groups play a role in shaping AI’s future. Support regulations that enforce fairness, hold companies accountable, and prevent bias from being hardcoded into the next generation of AI.6. Make Bias Unprofitable – AI bias isn’t just an ethical failure; it’s a business risk. The more companies realize that skewed, exclusionary AI damages trust, alienates customers, and creates PR disasters, the more they’ll be forced to take it seriously.AI will shape the future—but whose future will it reflect? My Encounter with ChatGPT’s Racial Bias

In today's rapidly evolving employment landscape, the concept of boundaryless work is making significant inroads. As Deloitte explains, boundaryless work transcends the traditional barriers of time, place, and organizational hierarchies to foster a more flexible and adaptive work environment. It represents a shift from the rigid 9 to 5 work schedules and fixed workplace settings to a model where work can happen anytime, anywhere, facilitated by digital technology. It enables organizations to tap into a vast pool of global talent, unbounded by geographical limitations, thus driving competitiveness and fostering a culture of inclusivity and diversity.Furthermore, the concept extends to leadership, giving rise to boundaryless leaders. These leaders thrive in fluid organizational structures, are adept at managing virtual teams, and exhibit a high degree of adaptability and openness to new ideas and diverse perspectives. They are skilled at leveraging technology to foster communication, collaboration, and innovation across geographically dispersed teams. Their leadership style is characterized by a willingness to share authority, encourage cross-functional collaboration, and promote a culture of continuous learning and development. As Deloitte puts it: ’Leadership is no longer contingent on position, hierarchy, or number of direct reports. Leaders today can be anyone who mobilizes workers to get work done, and that remains true whether those individuals have or don’t have formal reporting relationships and whether those individuals sit inside or outside the organization’.&nbsp;Transitioning from the foundational understanding of boundaryless work and leadership, it's pivotal to recognize the catalysts steering this shift. The change towards a boundaryless work environment is a reflection of deeper underlying currents in the modern business ecosystem.&nbsp;Catalysts Behind the TrendTechnological Innovation: The bedrock of the boundaryless work model is the technological innovation that has substantially widened the scope of where, when, and how work can be executed. Advanced communication tools like Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Slack have bridged the geographical divide, enabling real-time collaboration among dispersed teams. Cloud computing facilitates access to essential work resources anytime, anywhere, while project management platforms ensure seamless workflow coordination. These technological advancements have not only made remote work feasible but have enhanced efficiency, productivity, and the overall work experience.&nbsp; Generational Shift and Outcome-Based Evaluation: A significant force behind the move towards boundaryless work and leadership is the entrance of Gen Z into the workforce, alongside a considerable presence of millennials. These generations bring forth a new set of values and expectations from the workplace. They tend to value transparency, flexibility, and a merit-based evaluation system over traditional hierarchical structures.
