I was raised inside a democracy. I was taught it was the fairest system of governance we had. Democracy meant participation, freedom, rights. And for most of my life, I believed that. The alternative was centralized power and inequality. Simply unthinkable. But lately, I’ve found myself asking a question I never imagined I'd ask: Can democracy still function in a world moving this fast?We talk a lot about political fragmentation. But let’s be honest: wars and power struggles aren’t new.What is new is this: technology (thanks to AI in particular) is moving faster than any government can think. And that speed is breaking the very rules democracy was built on.In the last two years, I’ve watched AI go from a niche tool to a global force shaping jobs, education, warfare, identity, law, faster than any policy or election cycle could possibly catch up with. I’ve seen billion-dollar platforms launch, evolve, and disrupt entire sectors in the time it takes most governments to hold one single round of debate. And I’ve realized that we now live in a world where code moves faster than law and where consequences arrive before consensus.&nbsp;And that’s where the conflict started for me.Because I still believe in democratic values. I believe in fairness and inclusion. In giving people a voice. But I also believe in competence. In systems that can make decisions before it's too late. And right now, I’m not sure the system we inherited can keep up with the world we’ve created.So I want to walk you through the tension I’m sitting with as someone who wants to see democracy work, but is no longer sure that it can unless something fundamental changes.Let’s Start With the Foundations Democracy worked because the system was built on a few key pillars, conditions that allowed the process to be slow, inclusive, and still relatively effective. And if we’re going to be honest about what’s breaking, we need to look at those pillars.1. Civic Literacy For democracy to work, people need to understand how the system works. I don’t mean ticking a box on voting day, I mean understanding how decisions actually get made. How power moves. How policies are shaped and laws are passed. That used to be taught. Today, it’s gone. In a lot of countries, civic education barely exists. Most political conversation now happens in the form of headlines, memes, outrage clips, or 30-second soundbites. It’s entertainment, but it’s not education.And here’s my first uncomfortable thought: We’re entering an era where the decisions governments need to make (on AI, energy, biotechnology, planetary risk etc.) require serious understanding and critical thinking. Not opinions or ‘vibes’. And so I keep wondering…What happens when the people deciding the future don’t understand what they’re voting on?I know how that sounds. I hate that this thought is even in my head. I believe in fairness. I believe every voice should count. But I also believe that if you’re making decisions about something that can’t be reversed you need to actually grasp what’s at stake.And that leads to a question I really don’t want to ask, but here we are: “In a world this complex, can we keep pretending that every vote carries the same weight, regardless of how informed it is?”2. Shared Reality Here’s another thing I didn’t fully appreciate until AI recently reached its current level: Democracy only works if we agree on what’s real.We can debate values, argue policy and fight over priorities. That’s healthy. But the entire system depends on some shared baseline, a common reality to argue from. And I don’t think we have that anymore.Now your version of the truth depends entirely on an algorithm. Two people can watch the exact same event and walk away believing opposite things happened. And you can scroll through your feed and see a photo of a protest that never happened, a politician saying something they never said, or a video that’s 100% fake, except it looks real, sounds real, and triggers a real emotional reaction.I’ve been thinking about this a lot. Until now, technology mostly messed with how we talk and write. Now it’s messing with what we trust. And honestly, it’s scary. I was just having this conversation the other day: we’ve reached the point where technology can actively trick your senses. Literally, your eyes and ears. You can’t trust what you see anymore. And if you can’t trust your own senses, how do you even begin to make an informed decision?That’s the world we live in now. A single fake clip, designed to provoke just the right reaction, can sway public opinion before anyone knows what’s real. And once it spreads, it sticks. The correction never catches up.In the end, if we can’t agree on what’s real, democracy doesn’t work. &nbsp;3. Trust in Institutions This one cuts deep. I grew up believing that institutions were what kept democracy stable. Not perfect, but solid. Courts, public health bodies, elections, the media, these were the systems we relied on to hold power in check.&nbsp;But frankly, my trust is breaking down.Some of it is deserved. We’ve seen politicians lie. We’ve seen corruption scandals go unpunished. We’ve watched governments stall on urgent issues, while bureaucracy becomes the excuse.&nbsp;But that has always existed. What’s worse is that entire ecosystems now exist to actively destroy trust in these systems.&nbsp;There are political actors who’ve realized that if you discredit the system, you don’t have to play by its rules. There are leaders everywhere who claim the media is fake, courts are rigged, elections are stolen. Take Trump for example. He didn’t invent this strategy, but he made it mainstream.Then you have media personalities and influencers who’ve built entire audiences around telling people that everything is a lie, vaccines, elections, climate science, you name it. There’s a market for distrust.&nbsp;And then there’s the tech layer. Social platforms that don’t necessarily want to spread lies, but are financially incentivized to amplify whatever gets clicks. And what gets clicks? Outrage. Conspiracies. Fear. So the system ends up promoting content that chips away at institutional trust, over and over again.And this is where I feel the tension again. Because I want to believe these institutions can earn trust back. But I’m also watching them move slower and slower, too cautious, too reactive, while the world speeds up.So here’s what I keep circling back to: If people stop believing the system works for them, they’ll replace it with something that feels faster and clearer, at any cost.And what we’re seeing now, quietly but consistently, is a shift from systems that asked for trust (courts, media, elections) to systems that demand obedience.&nbsp;4. Time I’ve always thought of the slowness of democracy as the cost of doing things the ‘right’ way. Process over urgency. Fairness over speed. Fine. But that balance only worked when the world moved slowly enough to allow it.That’s not the world we live in anymore.Today, decisions need to happen in real time. Technology deploys at a speed we’ve never seen in history. A new AI model can reshape industries before any government has even formed a task force. Supply chains shift overnight. And climate systems are moving from warning to breakdown while we’re still trying to get a vote scheduled.And the most unsettling thing of all is not even that governments are reacting slowly, it’s that they behave like they have all the time in the world.You can literally feel the mismatch between the speed of reality and the pace of policy. And when that stretch becomes too wide, people start looking for something that actually moves.&nbsp;And once again If people start associating democracy with delay, and delay with danger, they’ll quietly opt out by disengaging and shifting their attention toward faster, simpler models of governance.And once that starts, it’s hard to stop. Because the trade-off begins to feel logical. If everything’s on fire, do you want a committee or a firefighter?So Where Do We Turn Now? The values of democracy - freedom, fairness, dignity - still matter. But the structure built to deliver them is collapsing in ways that are no longer fixable with reform.The world democracy was built for (local, slow, understandable) is gone. What we have now is a world governed by speed, complexity, and irreversible consequences. And no system designed in another century can keep up.So maybe it’s time we re-envision it all. If we had to design something from scratch - something that works in this reality - what would it look like?And to even begin, we’d need to ask questions that are uncomfortable. The kind that feel morally off-limits.&nbsp;<ul><li>What if participation can no longer be universal by default, but must be tied to understanding context and consequences?</li><li>What if we’ve treated equality of input as sacred, but ignored the damage of uninformed input in systems that now govern nuclear policy, AI development, or planetary risk?</li><li>What if the right to vote, in certain domains, must be earned and not given?</li><li>What if certain decisions (climate, health, intergenerational debt) need to be shielded from four-year election cycles, even if that means limiting public reversal?</li></ul>These questions clash with the principles many of us were taught to defend at all costs: one person, one vote. Equal say. Full inclusion.But if the world we live in no longer makes those ideas workable (at least not at this scale and speed) then the real danger is pretending the system still works when it doesn’t.Look, I don’t have the answer. But what I know is that we’ve reached a moment where the old frameworks can’t keep up with our current speed, and we must re-engineer a system to deliver the values we believe in.&nbsp;And the first step to do that, is to ask harder questions than we’re used to. Questions that will surely make us flinch and feel wrong in our mouths.&nbsp;That’s where I am right now. When Democracy Can’t Keep Up

Recently I had an interesting conversation with Nicky Verd, a Tedx Speaker and ‘future of work’ coach who operates at the intersection of humanity and technology. That conversation led to some reflections on how ‘mindset at scale’ is now the biggest challenge in education in emerging countries, and what part the Edtech industry and local governments play in the game of global equity.&nbsp; In an era marked by the democratization of education, where quality learning is increasingly accessible through online platforms, a subtle and intriguing paradox emerges. While we celebrate the universal reach of education, we inadvertently encounter a new form of educational disparity: the luxury of mindset. This calls for a much deeper debate than the current one, particularly in emerging markets, where the synthesis of education and mindset could forge a path to genuine global equity. Traditionally, education was a privilege and a symbol of status, serving as a vehicle for upward mobility. The defining factor that separated the knowledgeable from the uninformed was access—or rather the lack thereof—to information. The dawn of the digital era signaled a tectonic shift in this paradigm. Quality education became accessible to anyone with an internet connection. Geographical barriers crumbled, and financial constraints eased, as the world witnessed a proliferation of free educational resources and affordable online courses. However, in the corridors of the world's top universities, education signifies more than just knowledge and technical skills. It represents a blend of knowledge and a particular mindset, one imbued with innovation, entrepreneurial thinking, resilience, curiosity, self-development, and personal growth. These attributes together form the new definition of what it means to be educated in the contemporary world.&nbsp; The question that arises then is: where do emerging markets stand in their ability to create an environment that nurtures this complex blend of knowledge and mindset? Are they equipped to challenge traditional institutions at scale, fostering a culture that aligns with this redefined concept of education? Nurturing this mindset is not a simple task. It requires a concerted effort from both the edtech industry and local governments, working together to reshape the educational landscape. Edtech's Role in a New Era of Learning The Edtech industry must be at the forefront of educational transformation, not just in providing access to information but in shaping the very fabric of learning. Here are some examples of areas where edtech should increasingly focus in the next few years: 1. Creating Collaborative Platforms: Edtech must build platforms that enable collaboration between educators, learners, governments, and other stakeholders. These platforms could host discussions, share best practices, and create a cohesive network that emphasizes mindset development. 2. Offering Specialized Courses on Mindset Development: Crafting courses that focus on nurturing innovation, curiosity, resilience, and other critical traits, and making them widely accessible, would be a key step in bringing mindset education to the masses. 3. Partnership with Local Institutions: Engaging with schools and universities to incorporate mindset development into their curricula and providing the necessary technological tools and support will ensure a more integrated approach. Local Governments: The Strategic Catalysts On the other hand, governments in emerging markets also play a crucial role in setting the stage for this evolution in education. Their policies and initiatives can either enable or hinder the proliferation of a new mindset. For example, I would hope to see increasing efforts in the following areas:&nbsp; 1. Policy Framework for Collaboration: Governments must establish clear regulations and incentives that promote collaboration between edtech companies, educational institutions, and other industry players. Such policies could include tax incentives, grants, or support in pilot projects. 2. Promoting Entrepreneurial Education: Encouraging schools and universities to incorporate entrepreneurial thinking into their curricula, supported by edtech platforms, would cultivate an environment where innovation thrives. 3. Creating Innovation Hubs: Establishing and supporting innovation hubs or centers of excellence that bring together educators, edtech professionals, entrepreneurs, and students will foster a culture of continuous learning and creativity. 4. Aligning with National Educational Goals: Governments should ensure that their educational policies align with the larger vision of building a mindset that supports innovation and growth. This means working closely with edtech to understand how technology can be leveraged to meet these goals. 5. Facilitating Fail-Safe Environments: Implementing legal frameworks that allow for failure without severe penalties will encourage experimentation and risk-taking, essential elements of an entrepreneurial mindset. A Vision for the Future The transformation of education through the joint efforts of Edtech and local governments presents an exciting horizon. Emphasizing knowledge and mindset, the industry and policymakers are redefining what it means to be educated. The opportunities are vast, with the promise of democratizing elite mindsets and fostering personal growth at an unprecedented scale. The future demands a global collaboration, localized innovation, scalable models, and a firm commitment to making education not just a repository of information but a crucible for personal development and success. At the crossroads of these quantifiable and abstract aspirations stands a pivotal pillar: Leadership. From Startup to Scale-up: The Evolving Role of LeadershipIn the startup phase, agility is the name of the game. Teams are lean, roles overlap, and everyone wears multiple hats. Jill might be the marketer by day and the operations specialist by night, while Jack doubles up as the product developer and project manager. As startups blossom into scale-ups, several shifts occur:Role Specialization: As scale-ups grow, companies witness a surge in role specialization. This not only ensures that each function is led by a subject matter expert, but it also poses a challenge. The more specialized a role, the tougher it becomes to find a fitting replacement. Hence, leaving a void in leadership in such specialized roles can be detrimental.&nbsp;Heightened Pressure: Scale-ups face a twofold pressure. Internally, there's the challenge of meeting more ambitious targets. Externally, the stakes rise with every investment round, with investors demanding not just returns, but also predictability, sustainability and foresight.&nbsp; Complex Operational Dynamics: With growth comes complexity. Processes that were once quickly improvised now require careful design and documentation, extending from days to weeks. Decision chains elongate, and the ripple effect of one leadership decision can impact multiple facets of the business. Why Succession Planning Takes Center StageThe evolution highlighted above morphs succession planning from a 'good-to-have' in startups to a 'must-have' in scale-ups. However, many CEOs, despite being the vanguards of their companies, often overlook this critical aspect. The relentless pace of scale-up life, coupled with the reassuring presence of a dedicated team, can give a false sense of security. Many CEOs might believe that their C-suite counterparts have succession covered within their departments. But this assumption can be perilous.Moreover, while company health metrics traditionally spotlight financial data, user acquisition, and retention rates, they rarely shed light on organizational wellbeing, especially in terms of leadership stability and engagement. This blind spot can be a ticking time bomb. The Top 5 Risks Looming Over Scale-ups:Operational Disruptions: Any gap in leadership can stall crucial decisions. For a scale-up, this could mean faltering on a significant product launch, missing a market expansion window, or not capitalizing on a game-changing partnership.&nbsp;Culture and Morale Erosion: The culture of a scale-up is its heartbeat. Frequent changes or an unclear leadership future can shake the foundation of this culture. The aftermath? Plunging morale, escalating attrition, and a tarnished employer brand.&nbsp; Investor Alarm Bells: Inconsistent leadership can be a red flag. Investors seek stability, vision, and strategic direction. A tumultuous leadership scene can spook both current and potential investors, possibly affecting funding rounds and valuation.&nbsp; Talent Acquisition Hurdles: Top-tier talent seeks organizations with clarity in vision and stability in leadership. An unclear succession plan can deter these high-flyers, thereby stunting the scale-up's growth potential.&nbsp; Strategic Myopia: Without clear leadership succession, scale-ups might find themselves in reactive modes, battling fires rather than strategizing for the future. This short-term view can cripple long-term aspirations.So, understanding these challenges and potential pitfalls, how can scale-ups effectively navigate the waters of succession planning to secure their future? Proactiveness is key.&nbsp; Neglecting Soft Skills: While technical competencies and experience are crucial, soft skills like emotional intelligence, adaptability, and leadership charisma are equally vital. The Path Forward for Scale-upsThe difference between success and stagnation can hinge on how effectively leadership transitions are managed. By acknowledging the importance of succession planning and adopting a structured approach, scale-ups can ensure they remain agile, resilient, and poised for growth even amidst leadership changes. AI has a way of holding up a mirror to humanity by amplifying what’s already there. This became clear to me during an interaction with ChatGPT that I didn’t expect to go quite the way it did.I uploaded an image of a young Black woman with short curly hair and requested a painting in her likeness. Simple enough, right? But when I saw what the AI had created, my stomach dropped. The woman in the painting was clearly caucasian. Her deep brown skin had been replaced with a pale complexion. Her short hair was smoothed into wavy, shoulder-length blondish strands. Even her eyes had changed—now a striking blue. It was as if the AI had glanced at her, acknowledged her, and then decided to rewrite her into something else.I decided to go deeper with Chatgpt. This is part of the actual exchange I had:Me: Why does the painting look nothing like the photo? The woman isn’t even the same skin tone.ChatGPT: AI models rely on interpretative algorithms that might not prioritize specific details like skin tone or cultural markers. This can result from biases in the training data.Me: Why did the AI paint the woman white?ChatGPT: This happens because of inherent biases in the training data, which might overrepresent certain demographics. Additionally, ambiguous prompts may lead the model to default to patterns it’s seen most frequently.Me: So, in summary, you’re saying the model has built-in biases?ChatGPT: Yes, that’s correct. Generative AI models like DALL·E can exhibit biases, not intentionally, but as a byproduct of their training.Me: But where do these biases actually come from?ChatGPT:1.
